Grafting nanocellulose with diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid and chitosan as additive for enhancing recycled OCC pulp fibres

Abstract This paper develops a novel additive for effectively recycling old corrugated container (OCC) by functionalizing nanocellulose (NC) with diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (DTPA) and chitosan (CS), investigate the reinforcing mechanisms effect of developed on physical properties recycled OCC pulp handsheets. The tensile, tear burst index, air permeability, tensile energy absorption (TEA), drainage performance handsheets are examined. Fourier transform infrared FTIR) spectroscopy, thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) scanning electron microscopy (SEM) used chemical microstructure characterization both NC based additives from pulp. results show that functional groups additive, such as carboxyl, amino hydroxyl groups, can bond fibres to generate bond. leads an increase in crosslinks bonding area between fibres, which increases their strength improves rate. SEM shows had tighter inter-fibre bonds smaller pore structure. Addition 0.3% NC-DTPA-CS optimal 31.64%, 22.28% 36.6% index respectively, permeability decreases 36.92%. Graphical
